Spare Wheels is going to be a Dunbar area transport club where local people will be able to hire the transport they need at a reasonable cost.
Last year in the UK over 100,000 people were members of car clubs, attracted by the convenience of having easy access to a car without the hassle of actually owning one. Carplus, a national charity supporting local car clubs, estimates that if you drove fewer than 6000 miles last year, joining a car club could have saved you £3,500.
Our aim for is for the Spare Wheels Transport Club to access external funding in order to keep our costs low. Our priority would be for the charges to reflect the running cost of the cars, not to make a profit. In the first instance we are imagining having two cars, a small one e.g. a Ford Focus and a 7-seater such as a Vauxhall Zafira, and to follow the example of other rural car clubs by having an annual membership fee of around £60 per household, plus hourly hire charges of £3.50 per hour (up to a maximum of £27 per day). There would also be a mileage charge of around 20p per mile to cover the costs of fuel and consumables. Depending on interest we will also consider hiring out vans and specialist bikes e.g. folding bikes and child trailers.
Please fill out this online survey to let us know your ideas so that we can create a transport club which meets the needs of people in Dunbar.
