Spring 2025
Dunbar Grammar Volunteers
We are incredibly proud to celebrate our two fantastic groups of young volunteers from Dunbar Grammar School, who have made a real difference in our local community.
Our amazing Beehive Nursery Garden volunteers have been delivering nature-based activities for the younger children, which they designed themselves. The little ones had great fun recently making nature bracelets, playing garden games, and planting a variety of seeds the volunteers have brought so much energy and creativity and have helped the wee ones develop a love for the outdoors and a special connection with the Beehive Garden. The volunteers have truly inspired the children, and their presence has been a joyful part of nursery life.
Meanwhile, our other fantastic group has been making a big impact at Dunbar Day Centre. These volunteers have supported staff by helping to serve lunch, pour teas and coffees and host quizzes, and, most importantly, spend time getting to know our elderly friends in the community. Their warmth and willingness to connect across generations have brought smiles and meaningful conversation to the centre and lots of laughs! Each volunteer has dedicated over 25 hours each to these projects – an amazing achievement that was recognised with a Saltire Award for their commitment to volunteering. Everyone at Dunbar Grammar, the Beehive Nursery, and the Day Centre is extremely proud of these young people. Their kindness, commitment, and community spirit are truly inspiring!

A heartfelt thank you and congratulations from me – you’ve made a lasting impact!
The Beehive Garden Update
As well as having fun with the volunteers nursery children have been planting a host of seeds from lettuce, to peas and sweetcorn, beetroot , beans radishes, sunflowers and sweetpeas. The poly tunnel and raised beds are going to be full and busy this year with lots of fruits and veggies for the little ones to grow and harvest.

We are also trying our hand at Cucamelons. Cucamelons, also known as Mexican sour gherkins or mouse melons, are small, grape-sized fruits that resemble tiny watermelons but taste like cucumbers with a citrusy twist, I am really looking forward to harvesting some of these!

The garden is full of pear and cherry blossom and the daffodil highway looked sensational this year. Naomi’s crew continue to weed and transform the allotment area from an unruly tangle of brambles and thistles to what now looks like a proper allotment! This has been a big job and all of the help has been much appreciated. Thanks also go to our Beehive helpers who did a power of work on the garden at the weekend clearing the bog, watering the garden, mowing, tending, mending and weeding!
We hosted a spring garden open day and invited local story telling legend Chris Yule who enchanted children, carers and nursery staff with his tall tales and ginormous bubbles, it was a magical experience and a beautiful day, so lovely to see and hear the Beehive full of little people and lots of laughter!

The Green Team
The green team have been busy, together, we’ve been nurturing a selection of fruit and veggies including tomatoes beans, mini turnips, spring onions, and potatoes. We’ve also been bringing on cosmos seedlings which we hope will add a joyful splash of colour to their own garden, creating a beautiful space for them to sit out in on summer days.
