Coastal Connections

This project, initially running through the summer of 2025, is an invitation to people to explore and connect with our coastal environments from the salt marsh of Belhaven Bay to the astonishing geology of Whitesands/Barns Ness.

  • Local experts and enthusiasts will lead a range of activities and events such as:
  • Rock pool guddles with the Countryside Rangers
  • A ‘touch tank’ to get up close and personal with local sea creatures
  • Meet the Kittiwake Warden and the kittiwakes too
  • The Pearl of Dunbar – wooden boat restoration project at the Harbour
  • Learn about rigging ropes, knots and splicing,
  • See how a lobster pot is made
  • Come on a geology walk and discover what the shoreline can tell us about how our landscapes and environments were formed.

‘Shore Lines and Tide Marks’ is the title of the exhibition we are creating for John Muir’s Birthplace. Invited artists will lead community workshops to create material for this display.

‘Art on the Beach’ will be an opportunity to respond to marine environments. Beachcombing with a difference to find objects, thoughts and feelings, make your own nature journal, try cyanotype photography, simple printing techniques and wind drawing.

The art activities will take place during July 2025 but we will also run events during the course of the exhibition in August and September.

Underpinning the programme is our aspiration that by bringing people together to deepen their connection and understanding of our environment this experience will inspire thoughtful action to safeguard our natural world and become a more resilient community.

Exact dates will be posted on the website shortly and confirmed in our July newsletter but if you are interested and would like more information now please contact Jo McNamara at jo@sustainingdunbar.org
