Hedgehogs in January and February

At the moment hedgehogs are usually still in hibernation (which generally last around 4 months from around December to March/April). I’m not aware of any hedgehogs that have been seen in Dunbar this month yet but we did see footage of a hedgehog at Lammermuir House Care Home and in a couple of local gardens in December. Do get in touch if you have seen one as it would be interesting to get a feel for how many might be out and about (email jen@sustainingdunbar.org).

Hedgehogs are known to sometimes wake during hibernation, often during spells of milder weather, and come out for a drink or a snack. They can often move hibernation nests as well.

See Hedgehog Street for tips for hedgehogs in January and February.
