A massive hyperscale AI datacentre development has been proposed in Dunbar and Sustaining Dunbar are asking you to consider the negative impacts this would have at the local and national level and make your voice heard.
Details of the West Barns Mains proposed development can be found here, with new information about the application being updated when available. It would cover a massive 60.2 hectares, be built on excellent (Grade 2) agricultural land which is home to an abundance of wildlife and be in close proximity to local residents.
There is building evidence worldwide that these ‘Green’ Data Centres will have a significant negative effect on the environment, consuming vast amounts of energy and water. Action for Protection of Rural Scotland has stated that ‘Data centres are the biggest threat to Scotland’s net zero target and to our countryside’. Find out more about their Scotland wide campaign here
There is a local facebook group for people to share their thoughts about it and to find out ways to oppose this local development.
The Dunbar Opposition Campaign is focusing on the bigger picture just now by joining forces with others throughout Scotland to ask the Scottish Government to have a moratorium on Hyperscale AI data centre applications until they can properly assess the impact they will all have in Scotland if they were all to be agreed (with currently 24 in the pipeline, including Dunbar).
We are highlighting 3 things that everyone can do to take some ACTION NOW
- Come along on Wednesday 24th June at 12 noon (to around 2pm) to join a gathering outside the Scottish Parliament ahead of First Minister’s Questions to send a clear message to our MSPs: we do not support plans for hyperscale data centres across Scotland. This is an opportunity for everyone to make their voices heard and show that Scotland’s future should not be decided without proper scrutiny, robust planning policy, and meaningful public engagement. Please join us if you can.
- We also encourage everyone to write to their MSP in advance to ask them to support stronger oversight of hyperscale data centre developments. For more information about who to contact see here.
- Sign these petitions run by Scottish Green Party and Action to Protect Rural Scotland
Together, we can ensure that our local communities have a voice in decisions that will shape Scotland for generations.
